hot chocolate, hot date: no such thing as a stupid question

i'm a grad student, which means being both cursed and blessed with a very flexible work schedule and "office". coffee shops can offer some of the best work environments: the constant muffled activity and conversation keep the screaming silence -- of libraries, for example -- at bay and makes the solitary work of writing and researching not only un-lonely but rather entertaining.

in the process of spending hours each day working in coffee shops -- where, since i don't like the flavour or effects of coffee, i enjoy a daily mug of hot chocolate -- i can't help noticing some of the interesting on-site goings-on.

this is an account of some of those.
